Napoleon I (1769-1821) Brilliant French military leader; he ruled as First Consul of the French Republic, then as Emperor of the French. Manuscript letter endorsed "Accordé N" as Emperor, 1p, 12½ x 7¾ in., Army of Spain, Paris, 22 Dec. 1811. Napoleon agrees to a request from Major General Alexandre Berthier (Prince and Duke of Neufchatel, and Prince of Wagram), that a three-month convalescent leave be granted to Lieutenant d'Echata of the 5th Light Artillery, who "during the heaviest attack of the siege of Tarragona…already twice wounded honorably, threw himself with eagerness upon the enemy and received a bullet in his foot which is now lame…." Fine. Matted with an engraving of Napoleon and a transcription of the letter and framed to an overall size of 17 x 27¼ in. A translation is affixed to the back of the frame.
