Catherine II, "The Great" (1729-96) Empress of Russia (1762-96). Document signed as Empress, 1p., in Russian, 10¼ x 15¼ in., 30 April 1785, St. Petersburg. A military order promoting Captain Ivan Shennert to Major. The document has a decorative engraved border; red traces remain from the missing government seal. Catherine's signature is 4 inches across. Matted with two images and framed to an overall size of 16½ x 30½ in.
