Jay, John (1745-1829) A founding father of the United States; he served as President of the Continental Congress and as minister to Spain and France, then became the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1789-1795) and Governor of New York (1795-1801). He co-authored the Federalist Papers with Alexander Hamilton and James Madison and negotiated the Jay Treaty with Britain in 1794. Document signed as Governor of New York, 1p, 10 x 16 in., Albany, 30 Aug. 1798. Appointing "William Alexander Captain of a Company of Artillery in the Brigade of Militia in the County of Herkimer…." Fine; clean and attractive. Seal is intact at upper left and signature is bold. Matted with a portrait of Jay in judicial robes and framed to an overall size of 17 x 29½ in.
