STS-51D, 1985, FLOWN Copper from the Statue of Liberty. The flown copper, removed from the Statue of Liberty as part of the statue's restoration, was used to make cachet insert for an "Official Statue Centennial" First Day Cover. Two twelve pound, hollow copper models of the statue were flown on the flight, one of which, missing the torch, was melted down after the flight to make the cachet in the cover. Included with the cover are three NASA color photos showing the models being packed for the flight as well as copies of NASA and Postal Service letters authorizing the flight of the copper models for PR purposes and a crew patch from the flight. An unusual FLOWN item that was produced in relatively limited quantities and is seldom available.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.
