STS-1, 1981, NASA Color "Tile" Photos. This lot includes 15+ NASA 8x10" color glossy photos of tiles removed from STS-1 after the flight for testing purposes. These behind-the-scenes photos show cross sections of the tiles after blue dye was dripped onto the tiles to see where the tile waterproofing had burned out from the heat of reentry. The waterproofing was important because the tiles could absorb water prior to subsequent flights (which some did), thus causing them to fall off during launch. An email from the consignor explains this testing further. ALSO included are five pieces (various sizes) of soft white protective pads as used on various Shuttle flights. An interesting lot.
