"Napoleon & Josephine" Painted Bone Gamebox. Napoleonic prisoner-of-war made, 6½ x 2½ x 1 in. high carved bone gamebox with lid of two colorfully painted images of Napoleon and Josephine under glass, c. 1814. The box is constructed of wood covered with thin, inscribed bone panels. Now empty, it once contained pieces for playing a game. The bone panels are nicely decorated with floral designs and the painted figures of Napoleon and Josephine are bright and detailed, produced by a prisoner of war. The box exhibits a certain amount of chipping and wear, a small crack along the right side, and a loose panel above the sliding lid. Still, this is a rare, one of a kind item, related to the exiled French military leader.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
