Lot 45

1803 C-2 R4. Fine-15. Five points sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned bluish steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but do show extremely fine roughness under strong magnification. The notable marks are a very shallow pitmark in the field before the lips, another under ER in LIBERTY, and a splash of darker toning under the E in UNITED. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, which Manley says is rare. This is the plate coin for Breen's state IV in his encyclopedia, and he calls the die state extremely rare.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
Ex Clinton Hollins-Rick Gross 4/78-Bill Weber 4/95.

Realized $4,255
