Lot 3977

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC approved. Well struck and nicely toned. A special choice Mint State example in all respects, the luster is smooth, fresh and unyielding, while natural shades of toning accent both sides. The strike is bold in the centers but typically soft in areas at the stars and rim dentils, indeed, one of the few choice examples seen on virtually any date in the 1837-39 Capped Bust half dollar series. The Philadelphia Mint struck the issue on its newly installed steam-driven press. (The early bust halves were struck on hand-operated screw presses which sometimes left an uneven impression.) Pop 75; 90 finer (PCGS # 6176) .
Estimated Value $2,900 - 3,000.

Realized $3,220
