Zanzibar is a group of islands 25-50 km. off the coast of East Africa. In the early part of the 19th century, the islands of Zanzibar were controlled by Oman, but in 1861 Zanzibar became independent of Oman and was a self governing area. Zanzibar was an important trading area for spices such as pepper, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. This independence only lasted until 1890 when the British took control. The coin pictured here is the only crown ever issued by independent Zanzibar.
