Lot 753

Monaco. 5 Francs, 1837-M. Dav-219; KM-96. 24.91 grams. Honore V, 1819-1841. Head of Honore right. Reverse: Grimaldi arms: Crowned shield on stele, flanked by Pontifical supporters bearing swords. Fully struck up. A few minor contact marks on portrait, with some faint to light marks in fields. Softly satiny devices on mirror fields. Superb old toning -- a medium gray reflecting colorful coppers and russets, with occasional intense blues and violets. Scarce in this grade. NGC graded MS-63.

Monaco was technically a protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia as per the ruling of the Congress of Vienna, yet it was allowed to keep its ruling prince. Monaco then was somewhat larger, but the local towns of Menton and Roquebrune, which were revolting, were sold to France for 4 million Francs, reducing Monaco to its present size.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
Ex Irving Goodman Collection.

Realized $3,335
