Lot 537

Denmark. Proof Speciesdaler, 1840 (Copenhagen). Dav-74; Cr-128; Hede-3a. Christian VIII. Mintmark, heart. Fully mirrored surfaces sheathed in lovely steel-gray toning with iridescent hues. Faint hairlines account for the technical grade, but this coin has excellent eye appeal. Extremely rare in this condition. NGC graded Proof 64.

Christian VIII, King of Denmark, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg, ruled from 1839-1848. He was the nephew of Christian VII and successor to Frederick VI. Although under his watch there was increasing tension with Germany over the ownership of the duchies of Schleswig-Holstein (which occupy the Jutland peninsula), his reign is known for the exceptional growth of prosperity in Denmark.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
Ex Irving Goodman Collection.

Realized $2,990
