Great Britain. Norman Kings of England. AR Penny, ND (Sandwich mint, struck c. 1083-1086). North-848; S-1257. 1.31 grams. William I, 1066-1087 AD. PAXS type. Moneyer, Ielfgate. Central circle; a crowned, draped and mustachioed bust within, facing and holding scepter in right hand, bust extending to edge of flan; +PILLELM REX around. Reverse: Central circle, within a cross pattee with annulet in each angle containing one letter of PAXS: +IELFGTE ON SAND around. Remarkable portrait with a bold arm. Especially bold strike for type, with just a light touch of doubling in parts but clear legends, on a full flan without splits or flaws. Handsome, old dark silvery gray toning, reflecting as blue. Extremely rare mint, located near Dover. NGC graded MS-63.
