Lot 261

Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (Lewes mint). North-836; S-1186. 1.34 grams. Harold II, January-October 1066 AD. PAX type. Moneyer, Oswold. Crowned and bearded bust left, scepter before; +HALOL·D REX ANG around. Reverse: Central circle, within horizontal register, PAX; +OZPOLD ON LEPEEI around. Deeply struck, on an especially choice and full flan of fine metal with high rims. Dark to almost ebony toning; the lighter recesses a dark pink or russet, with occasional intense peacock iridescence. Lustrous. Rare, especially in this gem grade. An outstanding, sensitive medieval portrait! NGC graded MS-62.

Anglo-Saxon England ended abruptly at Battle, near present-day Hastings, when an enemy arrow struck King Harold in the eye, killing him on the field. The resulting Norman Conquest ushered in an entirely new era, dominated by hated Frenchmen descended from earlier Viking invaders.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). Illustrated in Money of The World, coin 69.

Realized $10,350
