Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (York, struck 1059-1062). North-828; S-1182. 1.29 grams. Edward the Confessor, 1042-1066 AD. Hammer Cross type. Moneyer, Scula (or Skuli). Crowned, draped and bearded bust right, scepter before; +EADPAR DRE· around. Reverse: Short voided cross, the arms terminating in pelleted crescents, annulet (for York) in one angle; +SCVLAEO ON EOFERPICE around. Choice on a quality flan, with a deeply engraved portrait and a splendid, even strike. Complete, sharp legends. Superb dark gray, almost ebony, toning (quality hoard patina). Lustrous in areas. A particularly nice example. NGC graded AU-58.
Estimated Value $500 - 700.
The dark patina has been noted in the Yorkshire Museum syllogy as typical of the color of a hoard of pennies found inside the old city of York many years ago. Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection).
