Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (Thetford, struck c. 1009-1017). North-779; S-1154 var. 1.28 grams. Æthelred II, 978-1016 AD. Last Small Cross type. Central circle, diademed and draped bust left within; + EDELRED REX AN around. Reverse: Small cross pattee, with similar smaller cross at each end; + PVFNOÐ MO ÐEOÐ, around. Very rare variety with 4 small crosses around central cross. Sharp strike on a full flan of excellent metal. Fairly light silvery to smoky toning. A gem! NGC graded MS-62.
