Great Britain. Kings of All England. AR Penny, ND (Winchester, struck c. 985-991). North-771; S-1150. 1.65 grams. Æthelred II, 978-1016 AD. Transitional Crux type. Aelsige, Moneyer. Central circle, diademed and draped bust left within, without scepter; + ÆÐELRÆD REX ANGLORX around. Reverse: Central circle, voided cross with pellet center, C R V X in angles; + ÆLFSIGE MOT PINT around. Bust similar to that of the Crux type but no sceptre. Between the "M" and the "O" in moneyer, an omega mark instead of the traditional dash. Sharp strike, details full and bold, on choice flan and metal. Almost glossy, warm black patina. NGC graded AU-58.

One of the finest known of this elusive and mysterious issue. As rare as the Benedictine Hand variety but not so famous.
