Lot 213

Great Britain. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, ND (London mint, struck c. 886). North-646; S-1062. 1.45 grams. Ælfred the Great, 871-899 AD. Third Coinage; London monogram type. Detailed diademed, draped bust right; + ÆLFR - ED REX flanking. Reverse: Inscription in three lines: TILVINE / MONETA above and below large, central "Londonia" monogram, with crosses pattee flanking. Bold, crisp strike on choice metal. Die break obscuring "Æ" on obverse. Attractive smoky gray to dark steel blue-gray toning. Some mint luster evident. Very Rare, more so in this grade. NGC graded MS-61.

Likely struck around the year Aelfred occupied London, and commemorating the liberation of London from the Viking Great Army. A rare and desirable type, especially when it shows the moneyer's name. North notes on p. 94 that "all coins of this type bearing the names of other moneyers are Viking imitations." One of the classic types in all of British coinage.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.
Ex Dr Jacob Y. Terner Collection (by private treaty to the Millennia Collection). Illustrated in Money of The World, coin 66.
