Great Britain. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, ND (Canterbury mint, struck c. 852-858). North-618; S-1051. 1.32 grams. Aethelwulf, 839-858 AD. Phase IV coinage; inscribed cross type. Bare-headed, draped bust right; + AEÐELVVLF REX. Reverse: Moneyer's name on and between limbs of beaded cross; + DEGBEARHT MO, NETA in angles. Finely centered, bold strike on a choice, full flan. Metal very good, with only a few spots of verdigris, but some residual luster on reverse. Medium to deep smokey gray toning. Rare. NGC graded MS-61.
