Lot 898

Atchison, Calhoun, Webster & Other U.S. Senators. Sheet of pale yellow paper, 9½" x 7", signed by several U.S. Senators, all but Calhoun signing his state after his name, c. 1840-1850: "J M Mason / Virginia, J.C. Calhoun, Danl. Webster of Massachusetts, Roger S. Baldwin of Connecticut, Hopkins S. Turney / Tennessee, Willie P. Mangum of North Carolina."

Webster and Calhoun were bitter political enemies; David Rice Atchison was "President for one day" between Polk and Taylor, and Senator J.M. Mason became CSA commissioner to Great Britain and France. It is unknown why this group of such strong but divergent but divergent views all signed this sheet, but it appears complete and unaltered or cut. Fine.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

Realized $252
