Frémont, John C. 1868 Texas Debt Certificate for $1,000 signed on the verso ("J.C. Frémont"), 5¼" x 7¾". The certificate is headed "Southern Trans-Continental Railroad. Texas Division--From Jefferson to El Paso. Construction Series 'A'." The financing of this Texas Division was to be accomplished by the sale of bonds based on a grant to Frémont by Texas of eight million acres of land; however, the French agents employed for the purpose of selling the bonds falsely stated that they were guaranteed by the U.S. government, and Frémont, although not directly involved with the deception, was prosecuted by France in agsentia. Uncancelled and in excellent condition.
