Austin, Stephen (1793-1836) Texas colonizer; secretary of state of the Republic of Texas (1836); considered by many the Father of Texas. DS ("S.F. Austin") as a Commissioner for Texas, 1kp, 10½" x 8½", New Orleans, 1836, Jan 11. Fine; small paper loss in text from cancellation, not affecting signature. Texian Loan No. 370 is issued to Thos. D. Carneul, noted receipt of "Thirty-Two Dollars, the First Instalment on a Loan of Three Hundred and Twenty Dollars…to the Government of Texas for Five Years…." Boldly signed by Austin and countersigned by fellow commissioners B.T. Archer and Wm. H. Wharton.
