Morse, Samuel F.B (1791-1872) American inventor, painter, and writer; best known for the telegraph system, and the Morse Code, which he co-invented with Alfred Vail. ALS ("Sam.F.B. Morse"), 1p, 9" x 7", Poughkeepsie (NY), 1860 Oct. 30. To Samuel Colgate, regarding Morse's resignation as titular head of the Morse Insurance Company.
