Mondrian, Piet (1872-1944) Dutch abstract painter. ALS, 1p, 10½" x 8", 353 East 56 St., N.Y.C., 1942 Feb 27. Written in large, dark script to "The federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors Inc. / Chairman of Membership Com. Mr. Adolph Gottlieb" as follows: "I appreciate very much your kind invitation but can not accept it because I am already a member of the American Abstract Association." The large signature is bold and dark. When Mondrian lived in Paris in the 1930s, he was associated with the Abstraction-Creation Group, an avant-garde school of artists who worked with geometric abstract forms. When he moved to New York in 1940, he joined American Abstract Artists, an artists-run organization begun in 1936, whose purpose was "to expand ideas and promote the exposure and understanding of abstract and non-objective art." Mondrian is exceptionally rare in any form, especially holographic letters.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.
