Primitive Horse Skull. Mesohippus was a primitive horse that could be found in the White River Badlands region of South Dakota and Nebraska some 30-35 million years ago. The small horse was only 2 feet high and 3 feet long, about the size of a greyhound. Its long tail was more than 25 percent of its body length and it had three toes on each foot, with the middle toes longer than the others. Its teeth were suitable for browsing leaves from bushes and small trees. This museum quality complete uncrushed skull is 7.5 x 2.75 x 4 inches. It still contains its stone matrix inside the skull, but stands on its own on its lower jaw. The teeth are outstanding, with just a couple having been restored. Primitive horse skulls are in great demand and are only found in exceptional states like this when old collections are dispersed.
