Mesosaurus Marine Reptile. Mesosaurus was a very important 260 million year old marine reptile known for being the first reptile to return to the sea shortly after evolving from amphibians. More importantly, it helped to prove the theory of continental drift as it is found only in the western part of South Africa and the eastern part of South America. This nearly complete 12 inch long fossil on a 14 x 8 inch limestone matrix is from the Irati Formation of Brazil. The attractive brown bone displays excellent detail of the vertebrae, ribs, delicate feet, and particularly the crocodile-like skull which houses several small sharp teeth, each in its own socket. This considerable, above average specimen is missing only the majority of its two front legs and a few bones at the tip of the tail.

Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,500.
