Large Ground Sloth Claw. Ground sloths grew to a great size before becoming extinct. Paramylodon harlani was more than 6 feet tall and lived 1-2 million years ago in Alachua County, Florida. This gigantic, rare 8 x 2 inch long, slightly curved claw is much larger than usually found and has a custom made wooden stand for display. These huge claws were used for defense against predators and to dig up roots. Ground sloths have an important place in the history of American paleontology as president Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter in August 1796 about a large ground sloth claw that he found. The extinct species was later named Megalonyz jeffersoni after him and marked the beginning of vertebrate paleontology in the United States.
