Lot 1608

Huge 6-Inch T-Rex Tooth. This T-Rex tooth, found in an ancient river or lake bed of the 65-67 million year old Hell Creek Formation in South Dakota, is one of the largest ever to be auctioned. It is a shed tooth that broke off at the root level while the dinosaur was feeding. All T-Rex teeth are shed teeth, other than those found on the few dozen partial skeletons that have been located. The root of a T-Rex tooth was approximately twice as long as the exposed enamel part, which would have made this tooth 18 inches if the root was included. This gigantic tooth was found in several pieces, missing its tip as well as about half of one side. Because of its enormous size and importance, about 30% was professionally restored, mostly adding the 1.25 inch tip and filling cracks in the missing sections. The tooth was then placed back in the 8 x 6.5 inch matrix layer where it was found, which also included bone fragments of other dinosaurs. Although not perfect, with just traces of serrations, this tooth is very important in its ability to convey the massive size and thickness of the T-Rex's teeth and reflect the fact that the T-Rex is considered to have had the largest biting pressure of any known creature that has ever lived.
