Lot 1606

Golden Ammonites from Holzmaden, Germany. Holzmaden is famous for its yield of excellent 180 million year old preserved fossils, particularly golden ammonites. These ammonites are extinct relatives of octopus and squid that have had their mother of pearl shells replaced with golden colored pyrite over the millions of years that they were buried. This large 19 x 20 inch black shale matrix includes a very large pyritized Hildoceras sp. measuring 10½ inches in diameter. This specimen shows the defining ribbing patterns that indicate the size of the inner chambers. All Holzmaden ammonites have been flattened under the pressure of fossilization and are desirable in that they can be easily mounted and hung if desired.
