Extinct Sycamore Leaf. The Green River Formation in west-central North America is famous for its fish fossils, but beautiful leaf specimens are also found in these dried up lake beds. This extremely large 50 million year old 18 x 16 inch plate from Lake Uinta near Bonanza, Utah contains several partial leaves including a 4 inch Zelkova (elm leaf) and one near complete 9 x 6.5 inch Macginetea wyomingensis (an extinct variety of sycamore). This huge leaf has excellent vein detail as well as a stem. Fossils of this nature are rarely found as large or complete as this specimen.
