Ammonite Sculpture. Ammonites were cephalopods that resembled squid in a spiral shaped shell. This aesthetic 9 x 7.75 inch sculpture features a 100 million year old golden brown ammonite, Phylloceras, from Sidi Yahya Said, Morocco. Set atop a 200 million year old Crinoid (related to starfish) base, the Phylloceras is both large and beautiful, 7.75 x 6 inches, and polished to reveal the inner chambers which are colored in caramel and brown by tiny calcite crystals. The chamber walls, known as septa, have dissolved to reveal the squiggly patterns of the sutures that once strengthened its shell when it was alive. Its outer living chamber also features wonderful clear quartz crystals. Photos can truly do no justice to this beautiful and ornate specimen.
