Stylish Sculpture of a Striding Elephant. Japan, Meiji Period, 1868-1912. An excellent study, finely crafted, with careful attention to musculature and skin texture. Set into the mouth are two realistic tusks of darkly toned ivory (one is loose and should be glued). Piece overall in fine condition. Height: 9-3/4".
Estimated Value $750 - 950.
Perhaps the work of Seiya, although unsigned. Cf. Sotheby's, Olympia London (07-17-03), lot 81.
