[Audubon, John James (1785-1851)], "Velvet Duck, Fuligula Fusca," Plate 247, Havell Edition. Hand-coloured engraving with aquatint and etching by R. Havell, 1835, 21 5/8" x 31 1/8" (visible). From the first edition of The Birds of America. Matted and framed to an overall size of 29¾" x 39¼". A couple of tiny toned specks in upper background, else extremely fine.

The Birds of America was published in London 1827-1838, containing 435-handcolored aquatint engravings illustrating 1,065 birds of 489 species, printed on dated "J. Whatman" watermarked paper. Each of the four volumes weighed close to 70 pounds.
