Twain, Mark & Warner, Charles Dudley. The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Hartford: American Publishing Co., 1873. 9" x 6½", 8vo, pp xvi, 574. Very early first edition, mixed state. Cover in gilt-decorated brown cloth, with blind stamping to front and rear. Title page states "Sold By Subscription Only", previous owner signature on front end page, with fold-out map of the "Salt Lick branch of the Pacific R.R." "No ads at rear meeting points *AAAAAABA of "Mark Twain: A Bibliography of the Collections of the Mark Twain Memorial and the Stowe-Day Foundation", p.28. Binding conserved and losses to front flyleaf mended; minor foxing and staining to front and back end pages. The term "Gilded Age" was first coined by Twain from this very book.
