New York: Johnson, Fry and Co., 1873. 2 volume set, each 11½" x 8", 640pp and 638pp. Illustrated with 119 highly finished steel engravings: full page portrait plates of some of history's eminent figures. Thick 4to, both bound in brown half calf with dark brown cloth covers, gilt-lettering and devices at spine, raised bands, all page edges marbled, with marbled end papers. Leather covers lightly rubbed, with minor wear and chipping at heads of spine. Occasional minor foxing of plates and text and some light toning.
