Lot 1204

Attractive Wakizashi and Scabbard. Japan, 19th century. The blade, probably ancestral, is very sharp and retains a fine polish. It has been well cared for, showing a few minor scattered rust spots, the edge showing proper polish and no serious nicks; the temper line bold. The shagreen handle neatly and tightly wrapped, with fine quality fittings showing dragons and Foo lions. The iron tsuba of good quality also, and showing a fishing scene on one side, a riverine and temple view on the other. The fluted scabbard finely lacquered in black, and inset with a slim, small bronze and steel eating knife. Some cracks and chips to the lacquer, along with two bronze fittings missing, otherwise sword in general nicely preserved and obviously well cared for. Length: 25-3/4".
Estimated Value $500 - 750.

Realized $1,200
