Bayonet-Sword for the French Model 1866 Chassepot Rifled Infantry Musket. France, c. 1869. This bayonet has ribbed brass hilt with spring steel latch on the right side. The crossguard in steel with a screw-type fitting for the rifle's muzzle. The blade recurved and scimitar-like. Maker's stamp on top edge of blade: "Mre [Tonp?] de St. Etienne Juillet 1869". Comes with original nickeled scabbard. Blade cleaned sometime in the past, with scattered rust deposits remaining. Some light staining and rust evident on scabbard. Overall, piece in very decent condition. Length (in scabbard): 28". It was manufactured from 1866 to about 1874.
