Lot 1175

U.S. Contract Model 1795/1808 Flintlock Musket. By Elijah and Asa Waters and Nathaniel Whitmore of Sutton, Massachusetts, dated 1809. 44½", 69-72 cal. round steel barrel, with three proof marks; "V", "P", an "Eagle's Head", a "US" surcharge and a "V" stamped on the tang. The lock is also marked "1809" with an "Eagle" over an oval with "US" over "Sutton". The initials "J D" are carved into the right side of the butt of the stock and its left side at the rear of the side plate is marked with an unidentified cartouche. The stock is weathered and missing chips under the front of the lock, at the upper rear edge of lock mortise, and on the right side of the barrel tang. There is a mended crack in front of the lock, otherwise it is sound with normal scratches and dings from years of service. All steel regulation furniture has salt and pepper pitting and areas of deep pitting on the lock. In working order and a good example in "as found" untouched condition. Ref: See Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms…and their values by Norm Flayderman, c. 2001, pp. 444-447.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 3,000.
