Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889) President of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865). As U.S. Secretary of War (1853-1857) under President Franklin Pierce, Davis was instrumental in modernizing the U.S. army into a more efficient fighting machine. ALS, 4pp (2 conjoined sheets), 8" x 5", New Orleans, 1876 Mar. 19. To General Browne (probably William M. Browne, who had been Davis' A.D.C. and who was appointed B.G. C.S.A. by Davis), regarding a newspaper's publication of "an extract from a card of Genls. Gordon & Colquit, representing that the debts of the Carolina had been the cause of the Bankruptcy of the Southern Life…." Davis, who had become president of the Carolina Life Insurance Company in 1869, discusses the claim in detail and states, "I lost enough of money by that loosely conducted injudicious transaction, to be quite unwilling to bear the responsibility of the failure of that Company.…" Neatly and clearly written in pencil; small pin holes in blank upper margin, else fine.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.
Purchased from Joseph Rubinfine, 1979.
