Marshall, George C (1880-1959) American military leader who, as chief of staff (1939 to 1945), built and oversaw the largest army in history. As secretary of state (1947 to 1949), he formulated the Marshall Plan, which extended economic and military aid to foreign nations decimated by World War II, and for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.

TLS ("G C Marshall") as General of the Army, 1p, on "Office of General of the Army" letterhead, 9" x 7", 1952 Oct. 30. To Kenneth Crouch, regretting that he will be unable to attend a reunion of Company A, 116th Regiment, 29th U.S. Infantry Division. Fine.
