Lot 1449

1822 N-6 R3. AU-58. Slightly prooflike. Very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown with hints of golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. A tiny splash of darker olive toning right of star 5 and another over the E in ONE are the best identifying marks. Sharply struck very early die state with hard, slightly reflective obverse fields. Great eye appeal, just a touch of rub on the highest points from choice mint state. Sold as MS63 in the Starr and Halpern sales and called "tied for finest known." That claim is a bit optimistic, but the outstanding eye appeal can't be denied. Perhaps that's why this cent brought over $1500 in the 1988 Halpern sale.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500.
Ex Jascha Heifitz, J. C. Morgenthau 12/22/1937-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 12/4/84:1621-Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/88:387.

Realized $3,565
