Lot 1159

1798 S-148 R2 Style I Hair with Large 8. VF-25. Sharpness AU50 but the obverse is covered with microscopic contact marks that roughen the devices, and there are myriad faint hairline scratches that do not alter the natural toning. Rather frosty steel brown and chocolate with hints of lustrous lighter brown and tan faded down from mint color in a few of the protected areas. There is a small patch of shallow corrosion at the dentils over ER in LIBERTY and traces of microscopic reddish verdigris on the left top of the R in AMERICA. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II. Looks better than the description may make it appear. A very sharp cent that just misses the condition census for the variety.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
Ex David Johnson.
