Lot 1133

1797 S-129 R5. VG-10. M over E in AMERICA. Sharpness VF25 with an old pinscratch across the portrait at the forehead and two more across the neck at the throat. In addition there are a couple dull rim bruises at LI and several thin cuts on the edge in that area plus a few more on the edge at the F in OF. Fortunately the edge cuts do not show on either side. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive. Glossy dark steel brown. The date is bold and the legends are strong. The M over E feature is obvious without the aid of a glass. An important example of this rare variety. Called VF25 net VG10 and tied for CC#7 in the Breen/Bland condition census. Noyes has this one listed as tied for CC#8. Comes with an impressive provenance.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
Ex Richard Picker-Abe Kosoff 7/22/63-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., New Netherlands Coin Co. 11/73:445-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/77-Denis Loring.
