Lot 3273

1888 $3 Gold. Proof 63. Nice golden surfaces. Some reason PCGS claims coin has altered surfaces. A beautiful coin of which only 291 were issued. The 1888 Proof $3 had the largest mintage in the series, although no precise count of survivors is available. The present specimen is a glowing example, sleek golden in color, boldly made, and in fact, one of the frostier cameo pieces in this regard. Both obverse and reverse have surfaces with the "orange peel" ripple to the mirrors. There is some graininess or "aura" seen to the sides of the Liberty, this being normal for the Proofs (and found on other dates of the 1880s as well). Such a choice coin will be a great addition to either a specialized $3 gold piece collection or a U.S. gold Type Set.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Realized $9,200
