1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. NGC graded AU-58. O-130. R5. The only variety with berries arranged 7-10.Very well struck on a very decent planchet. Full sharp hair waves really opens your eyes with its detail! The definitive AU58 Flowing Hair half dollar. We do note a light mint made adjustment mark (die line?) that bisects Liberty's head. Plenty of mint luster is still present and all is overlaid with a uniform light slate gray tone. This exceedingly attractive specimen is from obverse die 18 in which star 1 pierces the open curl well through the lower part. Also, the point of the last star is centered in the opening between two star points and close to it. On the reverse, the berries are 7 left, 10 right (and the only 1795 reverse with this division). A fine die crack runs through S OF AMER and round defect dots are in STATES OF AMERICA. O and C are recut (PCGS # 6052) .

Several slightly differing head- and eagle-device punches were used during the year, the final ones attributed to John Smith Gardner, briefly Assistant Engraver: the famous and rare Small Heads. Half dollar coinage was interrupted to allow personnel to devote time to making silver dollars and gold coins, on orders of the new Mint Director, Henry William DeSaussure.

The varieties in this series (without or with die blunders) are nearly as individualized and distinctive as their cherished counterparts in the cents, and have come into their own with the latest release (fourth edition) of the Donald L. Parsley United States Early Half Dollar Die Varieties book.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 23,000.

Realized $26,450
