Lot 2478

1865 Nickel Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Lovely toning on both sides. Only 500+ Proofs struck this first year of issue. Always a popular date (but so hard to find in Gem condition like this with strong cameo features). Pop 15; 3 finer; 2 in 67; 1 in 67 Star. (PCGS # 3761) .

Die note: All four digits in the date are repunched, with the initial, largely effaced logotype located west of the prominent date. Three-cent pieces in nickel-copper alloy were supposed to retire the unpopular 3c Fractional notes, which had been authorized by the Act of March 3, 1863. The fractional notes found their major use in post offices. One would send a letter on its way (postage was 3c then); a pack of 100 would buy a sheet of stamps. They were the smallest in size and value of any fractional notes; they quickly became dirty rags and tattered in circulation; they were easily lost. After numerous complaints, the mint finally was directed to strike this curious denomination. Their use would decline in later years as cents and five-cent pieces took hold.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Realized $6,038
