Interesting Graeco-Roman Sealing. Rome, c. 50 BC-150 AD. The irregular lump of fine-grain reddish clay, showing deeply impressed finger prints, and on the back, the texture of papyrus sheet. Impressed motif from a very stylish "symbol" seal with Dionysian theme -- a youthful maenad face and a bearded satyr face comprising two elements of a profile elephant head. Cf. Henig, Engraved Gems from Gadara, no. 309 (but having three faces). Item intact. Length: 20 mm. Choice Very Fine.
