Roman Empire. Theodosius II, 402-450 AD. Gold Semissis (2.24 g), Constantinople mint, struck c. 430-440/450 AD. Extremely Rare. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse Victory seated right on cuirass, inscribing on round shield: "+ / xxx v;" legend, VICTORIA AVGG, CONOB; star at left, Chi-Rho at right. RIC 37; Depeyrot 80/4. Pleasant style, and sharp strike. Very lustrous, with slight brown toning in the recesses. Good Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $600 - 750.
Ex Marc Poncin Collection. Ex Gorny & Mosch Sale 126 (10-14-03), lot 2889. Kent, in the RIC, cites the only example known to him of this type, that being in the Bibliotheque National. The Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection.
