Lot 95

1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Wreath reverse, vine and bars edge. . S-9 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Frosty chocolate and steel brown with satiny mint luster covering both sides. No spots, stains, or contact marks, and the highpoints display no traces of rub. Sharply struck with the fine hair and wreath details clearly defined. The only flaws are some very tiny planchet flakes or fissures scattered about the obverse, as struck. The most noticeable of these planchet marks is at the dentils under the lowest hair strand, but none of them is deep or distracting. The reverse is choice with only a few microscopic planchet chips showing at the bottom near the fraction. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a faint die crack at CA in AMERICA. Struck very slightly off center to K-12 leaving some of the border beeds tight to the edge of the planchet. A sharp, very attractive Wreath Cent in spite of the tiny planchet flaws. EAC grade MS60, tied for CC#5 in the Breen/Bland census. The reverse is plated in the 1879 Frossard Monograph on the series, and both sides are plated in the Breen book to illustrate the die variety. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance.
Estimated Value $125,000 - 150,000.
