Russia. Alexander II, 1855-81 (1829) Gold Medal, 26.15mm with integral loop at top, signed R. Ganneman. Prize Medal for Excellence to Graduates of the Merchant Navigation Schools of Saint Petersburg and from 1834, Kherson.

Diakov-626.4 (Rarity 4); Smirnov-573/b. Obverse: Head left of Alexander II, with titles. Reverse: View of a boat's bow before flags, oars, trident, barrel and bale with, in the exergue, the date 28 November 1829. The date of foundation of the awards was 21 November 1829, but this variety exhibits the date of 28 November 1829, the discrepancy remaining unexplained. Only two to four gold medals were awarded annually to premier graduates of the institutions.

There are some fine hairlines and a few very tiny contact marks within the fully prooflike fields, otherwise a sharply struck and Nearly Mint State specimen. An important and desirable medal rated R4, Extremely Rare.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.

Realized $14,950
