Vatican. Florini di Camera, ND. Fr-46; CNI-XV pl. XIX, 7; Berman-633. 3.33 grams. 21.68 mm. Leo X (Giovanni de 'Medici), 1513-1521. Obv: Tiara and Keys over arms. Leg: LEO. PAPA. - .DECIMVS. Reverse: Saint Peter and Andrew fishing from boat. Leg: .SANCTVS. PETRVS. ALMA.ROM. NGC graded AU-58.

Leo had been groomed for the papacy since a young child. He was intelligent, articulate, and industrious. Yet his time as pope was a disaster. He was unfortunate to have to deal with Martin Luther and the Protestant schism. His position as a Medici prince embroiled him in the Italian wars of the time and seriously damaged the church's finances.
